WHAT IS A REHABILITATION ENGINEER?

In the UK, a Rehabilitation Engineer is part of the allied health team. NHS Rehabilitation Engineers (REs) are commonly involved with assessment and the provision of wheelchairs and seating to promote good posture and independent mobility, including electrically powered wheelchairs, and active user (lightweight) manual wheelchairs.

In advanced clinics, services may include assessments for specialist wheelchair control systems and bespoke seating solutions. Professional registration of NHS Rehabilitation Engineers is with the Institute of Physics and Engineering in Medicine (IPEM).
